Both now depend upon human decision and human will. My theology, briefly, is that the universe was dictated but not signed. Everyone carries his own inch-rule of taste, and amuses himself by applying it, triumphantly, wherever he travels. Be kind and considerate to others, depending somewhat upon who they are. Theologians always try to turn the Bible into a book without common sense. The happiness and misery of men depend no less on temper than fortune. Tact is one of the first mental virtues, the absence of which is often fatal to the best of talents; it supplies the place of many talents.

Temptation is an irresistible force at work on a moveable body. Silence is not always tact, and it is tact that is golden, not silence. We all have some taste or other, of too ancient a date to admit of our remembering it was an acquired one. The teacher is one who makes two ideas grow where only one grew before. No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public. Never before have so many been taken for so much and left with so little.

The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it. The hourly productivity of the worker will increase. As nuclear and other technological achievements continue to mount, the normal life span will continue to climb. Taste is, so to speak, the microscope of the judgment. There are several good protections against temptation, but the surest is cowardice. Good taste is the first refuge of the non-creative. Most subjects at universities are taught for no other purpose than that they may be retaught when the students become teachers.
